Barbara Bosworth & Henry Cataldo

Barbara Bosworth offers her experience in an AIR

Barbara Bosworth joined us Thursday to talk about her photography. She described influences that reach as far back as her childhood home and upbringing, through a more current project that included taking photographs of the New England National Scenic Trail as the first artist-in-residence for the trail. This project was financed in part by the National Park Service's Connect Trails to Parks program, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System in 2018. Many of these photographs were shown in the exhibition "To Be at the Farther Edge: Photographs along the New England Trail". Barbara is a photographer whose large-format images explore both overt and subtle relationships between humans and the rest of the natural world. Whether chronicling the efforts of hunters or bird banders or evoking the seasonal changes that transform mountains and meadows, Bosworth’s caring attention to the world around her results in images that similarly inspire viewers to look closely.

Students were interested in learning about her process, "How do you create your triptychs, do you move the camera or rotate it?" "How did being an artist in residence impact you and your work?" "Who are the people in your photographs?" Barbara was forthcoming and thoughtful about her responses. Students walked away from meeting her feeling impressed by both her photographs and by the care and passion she brings to her work and life.

Henry Cataldo Teaches Camera Basics

Henry Cataldo is a life long artist and educator. He photographs places, people, and events with gentle, yet persistent curiosity. His body of photographic work not only captures his intended subjects, but offers insight to a lifelong relationship between an artist and his camera. His love for well crafted photographs is apparent in both his work and his instruction. At MassArt and Concord Carlisle High School, Henry inspires students to advance their skills and artistic vision through creative assignments in black and white photography. On Thursday, Henry demonstrated pin hole camera technology, and allowed us to try our hand with this elemental photographic technique.
